May 1: May Day!

Happy May Day everyone, or as some of my friends chose to celebrate the common distress signal it saying, “happy MAYDAY!!!”. What is May Day, you may ask. Well, it’s a Northern Hemisphere spring festival that usually includes dancing, singing, and cake. Performers usually dance around a maypole with ribbons and then crown a Queen of May. There are many more ways of celebrating this holiday that span the globe (however most are in Western Europe).

In the United States the tradition on May Day is to gather flowers, leave them on a neighbor’s doorstep, ring the doorbell and run away. If your neighbor catches you while you attempt to escape you owe them a kiss. I did leave some pink daisies on my neighbor’s doorstep, but didn’t knock because I wanted to leave the gift sans kiss. Also, I presented some colorfuL flowers to a group of friends and my roommate to celebrate the coming of such a beautiful month! Wouldn’t it be the best start to your day if you left the house everyday to flowers on your doorstep?

April 29: Greenery Day

April 29: Greenery Day

Happy Greenery Day everyone! I apologize for my absence for a few months, but I am glad to be back blogging about my daily celebrations. What a wonderful and beautiful day to celebrate! Due to my living in Arizona, I unfortunately I didn’t get to celebrate this holiday as much as some of my friends who happen to live in the Northwest where it is usually alive with stunning green landscapes. However, I can still appreciate the amazing plants that survive, even thrive in the desert. On my patio I even have a little lemon tree and aloe vera which are both quite green and, as Bob Ross would say, are happy trees. I am definitely a huge plant lover, so a celebration of beautiful green plants makes for quite a lovely day. I also was sure to eat my green veggies for dinner to conclude today’s festivities.

Day 41: Carousel Day

July 25
Happy Carousel Day!

I wish I could say I got to ride a carousel for carousel day, but unfortunately I couldn’t travel to one. The celebrations will have to be postponed for a few days. Nonetheless the magic of sitting on your own horse, the lights twinkling, and the music playing makes me very nostalgic.

Up for Tomorrow: Lumberjack Day! (Northern Arizona University celebrations?)

Day 40: National Drive-Thru Day and Cousins Day

July 24
Happy National Drive-Thru Day and Cousins Day!
The drive-thru is a convenient creation yet it is so American. We like our food quick, convenient, and on-the-go. Burger joints started the drive-thru phenomenon, but now they can be found at restaurants with virtually and type of food. When I began driving I used to be scared of using the drive-thru so I always ran inside to get my food. After some coaxing from a friend I’m now a bit of a drive-thru addict.

Today I also want to take a minute to appreciate my cousins. They are your friends from birth and your playmates every time the family gathers at grandmas house. I was lucky enough to live close to 2 sets of my cousins throughout my childhood. We would spend days of the summer together, sleep over at each others houses, spend hours at the park, create magical worlds, put on billions of plays, and laugh for hours on end. Even though we don’t get to see each other very often, we always have a blast when we do get the chance. Cousins usually are your first friends in life and will be there for you your entire life. I’m so thankful for all of my cousins!

Happy Gorgeous Grandma Day and Hot Enough For Ya Day

July 23
Happy Gorgeous Grandma Day and Hot Enough For Ya Day!!!

Today was definitely hot enough for me! Phoenix in the summertime is always plenty hot enough for me. Every day it never fails to be in the triple digits, but nonetheless I’m thankful for the heat. The days are beautiful and I always feel like I’m on a vacation. I know the heat won’t let up for a few months, but the fall, winter, and spring will be glorious.

In my life I have been blessed with 3 amazing women I am proud to call my grandmas. I only wish my words would be able to do them justice. They all taught me so much about love and life. One was my great grandma who was such an inspiration to me. She lived into her 100’s and still continued to be an active old lady who cooked soup for the “old people” in her tiny town. She rarely ever missed a Sunday at church and really lived out Jesus’ love for others. One of my grandmas taught me about the joy of being around others. She was always the life of the party and could make friends with a scarecrow. She was never afraid to be silly. Her laugh and smile were contagious. My other grandma has really taught me about what it looks like to care for your family and close close to your heart. She has never hesitated to take in the troubled. In fact, there is even a row of pictures I drew when I was just a tiny tot that are still hanging on her stairway.

I have so many great memories of my grandmas and there will be many more to come.I have been so blessed to be able to live near both of my gorgeous grandmas and have them be a very important part of my life. They always have supported me in my many random activities and have taught me so much. I can never thank them enough.

Day 38: Spoonerism Day

July 22
Happy Spoonerism Day!!!
A spoonerism is an error in speech or a deliberate play on words. An example is saying “The Lord is a shoving leopard.” instead of “The Lord is a loving shepherd.”

Here’s a list of some funny ones:
-“Three cheers for our queer old dean!” (dear old queen, referring to Queen Victoria)
-“Is it kisstomary to cuss the bride?” (customary to kiss)
-“A blushing crow.” (crushing blow)
-“A well-boiled icicle” (well-oiled bicycle)
-“You were fighting a liar in the quadrangle.” (lighting a fire)
-“Is the bean dizzy?” (Dean busy)
-“Someone is occupewing my pie. Please sew me to another sheet.” (Someone is occupying my pew. Please show me to another seat.)
-“You have hissed all my mystery lectures. You have tasted a whole worm. Please leave Oxford on the next town drain.” (You have missed all my history lectures. You have wasted a whole term. Please leave Oxford on the next down train.)

Have some fun today and mess around with your words to see if your friends will catch on!

Day 37: National Ice Cream Day and Legal Drinking Age Day!

July 21
Happy National Ice Cream Day and Legal Drinking Age Day!
To celebrate with ice cream today I had my very first ever Klondike Bar! I’ve been wanting to try one for a few months now and I’m excited to have finally completed it. While it tasted good, I think there’s almost too much hype around it. Nonetheless I am proud to say that I’ve now tasted a Klondike Bar! However, I don’t think that I would be willing to do many crazy things for one. (luckily I don’t ever need to wax my chest like the guy in this video). So the real question is, what would you do for a Klondike Bar? To celebrate legal drinking age day I decided to have a nice glass of wine while watching some Dr. Who. It was quite a nice way to end the day.

Lessons Learned: There’s nothing insane that I would do for a Klondike Bar.

Day 36: Moon Day & ‘Toss Away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves”‘ Day

July 20th
Happy Moon Day & ‘Toss Away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves”‘ Day!
Unfortunately I didn’t get to celebrate the moon day very much seeing as the monsoon season is now in full force. Instead of getting to look up at the moon, I was looking up at cloudy skies and brilliant lightning flashes illuminating the night sky. Instead I found a beautiful picture of the moon and linked it below.
However, I did celebrate ‘Toss Away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves”‘ Day to its fullest extent. I met up with my ex-boyfriend for dinner and was able to come to so many realizations. It was a nice dinner and we were able to catch up for sure, but it also helped me to come to some closure. I kept having thoughts such as: “Maybe I should have done this and we would still be together” or “If circumstances were different things could have been different”. I have faced those thoughts and after having dinner I have tossed them away. I know things are for the best and instead of worrying about what could have been I can look to the future with joy and a smile on my face because I know that the best has yet to come.

Lessons Learned: Sometimes it just takes some time and acceptance to truly realize how much better off you are in the present. Letting go of the what-ifs of the past makes way for a bright future full of hope.

Day 35: Flitch Day

July 19th
Happy Flitch Day everyone! If you have no idea what this day means have no worries, most don’t. It is based off of an old tradition when married couples are awarded a flitch of bacon if they can swear to not having regretted their marriage for a year. It can be traced back to the 14th century.  A counsel  examines the nominated couples and attempt to show if they are deserving of the award. It’s an interesting tradition that’s for sure. To celebrate for today I cooked some delicious bacon for breakfast. Then I decided to watch a chick-flick to celebrate the marriage/love/devotion aspect of Flitch Day. Maybe when I’m married one day I will actually participate in Flitch Day.

Lessons Learned: I learned about an interesting, old English tradition that involves bacon. You can never have enough bacon!
